Our artists are aspiring and professional musicians from the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Through their dedication to performances, education, and community service, they are our ambassadors of Western classical music. We provide our artists with international teaching and performance opportunities, an instrument lending program, and a support network of kindred souls who are diverse in talents and passions yet united in their love of music.

MATTHEW CHEN graduated from The Juilliard School in the spring of 2018 under the instruction of Ms. Natasha Brofsky and has recently returned to pursue a Master of Music degree. Born and raised in Westlake Village, California, he began learning the cello at the age of six, and was privileged to study with Mr. Ben Hong, the associate principal cellist of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, for nine years. Matthew is currently co-principal cellist of the Juilliard Orchestra and has served as assistant principal of the Aspen Festival Orchestra. Recent highlights include a fellowship at the Tanglewood Music Center, working with conductors such as Andris Nelsons, Herbert Blomstedt, and Stefen Asbury, as well as participation in the 2019 Winter Workshop at the Four Seasons Chamber Music Festival. A passionate chamber musician, Matthew and his clarinet trio commissioned a new work for clarinet trio in May 2018 by composer Tengku Irfan and premiered the work in New York City. He has performed with artists such as Ani Kavafian, Hye-Jin Kim, Steve Tenenbaum, and Hsin-Yun Huang. His quartet, Arte Quartet, is a member of Juiliard’s prestigious Honors Chamber Music Program. In January of 2019, Arte Quartet performed the Schubert Cello Quintet with cellist Natasha Brofsky in Alice Tully Hall as well as on WQXR’s Midday Masterpieces series.
